The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) confirms that the manual lifting of heavy or awkward loads is one of the most common causes of workplace injuries each year.
Under Health and Safety legislation, employers must organise work so that manual handling of loads is avoided wherever possible. When it is unavoidable, the work must be planned, or equipment provided to reduce the risk of injury.
This Course is designed to provide you with an understanding of the Biomechanical Principles, Practical Skills and Understanding required to facilitate the Safe movement of loads in the home or in the workplace in Compliance with the requirements of the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work Regulations 2007.
Manual Handling training is not simply about physically manually lifting and moving things as many training courses lead us to believe, and it’s not about brute force. This is about knowledge and education, technique and the use of mechanical advantage to achieve our outcomes,
but at its most basic level it’s about back care.
Duration : A Manual Handling Training Programme is delivered over a half day / 3.5 to 4 hours.
e learning : The programme will be provided using a Blended Learning Approach.
Participants initially complete our on-line component in Manual Handling which they can do at their own pace. They will receive access to on-line course materials via our elearning platform, and the relevant sections will have all necessary materials and a Quiz to be completed at the end. On completion of this element they will be able to print off a Manual Handling Certificate of Completion. All material is self -directed with on-line tutor support. All lectures have audio voice overs to enhance the learning process, backed up by video and additional learning resources.
Upon completion of the on-line component learners can then attend our Practical Skills Training session (approx. 4 hours) which will apply the principles of human mechanics to movement and participants will then receive a Manual Handling Certificate also.
Practical Skills Training can be delivered on-site at your location particularly for your group, or if it suits your scheduling roster better participants can attend one of our public programmes

- You will learn how to handle awkward loads safely and effectively.
- Most importantly ; Having completed this programme you will have a clear understanding of the importance of back care, and the correct approach to the moving and handling of weight-loads.

Assessment Process :
This programme is assessed in two ways :
Theory Examination
Completed on-line.
A minimum Pass Mark of 60% must be achieved in order to Pass this component.
Skills Assessment
This will consist of a demonstration of practical skills based on the learning outcomes.
